Sculptor Peter Steyer - born in 1927 in Senica near Pressburg (Bratislava), a master class student of Richard Scheibe, and winner of the Georg Kolbe Prize - made a name for himself with his vibrant bronze sculptures from the Arab world and, later, with his lively studies of female and male dancers. Yet he also has an excellent reputation as a portrait artist. The artist donated twenty-one examples of his work to the town of Calw, which has been the patron of the Peter Steyer Foundation since 1994.

A bust of Hesse produced in 1989 - donated by Sparkasse Pforzheim Calw - welcomes visitors to the Hermann-Hesse-Museum on Calw's Martplatz. A further casting of the bronze portrait is to be found in the Sparkasse's Hermann-Hesse-Kabinett. Peter Steyer lives in Neubulach-Liebelsberg.
